In Queensland the creatures are also called the Johnston's freshwater crocodile, named after the Johnston River where they live. Usually they prefer freshwater wetlands where they can find plenty of food such as fish and birds. Rivers and riverbanks are also popular hideouts for freshwater crocodiles as long as there are plenty of plants under which they can hide. They need to feel safe in undergrowth and like hiding in tall grass.How long does the Freshwater Crocodile Live?How long do freshwater crocodiles live? They rarely grow older than 50 years, although occasionally a captive animal will survive longer if it has received good care and been provided with an environment conducive to its preferred lifestyle. The first 20 years of a crocodile's life are spent as an adolescent after which the growth process stops and the crocodile will remain the same size.Have Freshwater Crocodiles become Extinct?The skin of freshwater crocodiles is virtually worthless compared to that of a saltwater crocodile. The animals used to be hunted for their skins in the 1960s with the resulting leather being used in cheap knock-offs but the creatures no longer face that danger and are in fact protected in many areas. The biggest threat to freshwater crocodiles is the fact that more and more of their land is being taken away from them. Due to intensive farming and growing cities, the crocodiles have to live in smaller areas with less water and less space to find food.Although often perceived as menacing due to their pre-historic appearance, freshwater crocodiles are fascinating animals with an interesting reproduction process and a patience in their hunting activities that borders on the preternatural. Although you may watch crocodiles for hours, even days, and never see one strike its prey, when you do, you'll never forget the experience or the amazing speed of this seemingly indolent animal. It is worth visiting a location of freshwater crocodile habitation to study these animals, but always make sure that you are accompanied by a guide and never aggravate freshwater crocodiles. They will attack humans if sufficiently annoyed.
