How do Alligators Communicate?Both sexes communicate using aural, visual, tactile and olfactory cues. Their bellowing travels to larger distances in water. Excellent Good Average Bad Terrible Current RatingTheir complex body posture communicates additional information for courtship, which is reinforced with odor from paired musk glands reverted from under the chin and from the Cloacae. Near the end of courtship, both animals will engage in a bout of snout and back rubbing. This courtship last for several hours, and helps synchronize both spermatogenesis (sperm production) and ovulation. How does Alligators ReproduceWhen females reach sexual maturity at a height of 1.8 m (5.9 feet), they are ready for breeding. June and July are the months, whereby they prepare themselves to have babies. They build their Nests on mounds of high vegetation or raised banks to protect their eggs from drowning and other unwanted danger.Everglades Alligators usually lay 30 eggs in their nests. Their nests provide fairly constant incubation temperature for eggs, which determines the sex. Eggs at temperatures greater than 91°F (34°C) develop into male alligators; eggs at less than 85°F (30°C) develops into females and eggs in between these temperatures can be either males or females. Hatching occurs in mid-August after 65 days of incubation. When appropriate time arrives for the baby Crocodile to be born, hatchlings will make chirping noises to stimulate their mothers to uncover the eggs. Then the babies will either break out of their eggs by themselves using a little sharp protuberance on their snouts called the egg tooth, or the mother will take the eggs into her mouth and actually break them open herself. A baby alligator has a huge head with large eyes and a short snout. They walk with jerky, baby moments. The Mother takes care of her young ones and will give them protective cover. The babies follow her everywhere like little ducklings following their mothers. Their grunting, barking and squeaking is enough to tell their mother and their pod mates about their whereabouts. Are Alligators Facing Threat Of Extinction?Although Alligators have managed to survive for nearly 200 millions years, they are now facing the threat of extinction and are in deep crisis especially, Chinese Alligators.In late 1950's and early 1960's, the Florida Government was forced to declare Florida alligator population as endangered species, and this led Federal and international regulations during 1970's and 1980's which imposed restrictions on the trade of alligator hides, and illegal hunting. In the US, the Legislature banned killing of Alligators under SC Regulation 123-152. These efforts resulted in the Florida Alligators to soon recover. Since many decades, the Chinese Government has also been undertaking measures like building Alligator farms, national reservoirs where they can naturally habitat without human interference. As a result while paying a visit to Alabama, Arkansas, North &South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas and further towards the Southern Provinces of China, you will come across these animals basking in the sun. Many of them have also made the coastal marshes of Louisiana their home. In Florida alone there are an estimated more than 1 million American alligators. Alligators are solitary animals with a life span of about 30 to 35 years in their natural habitat and 50 years in Captivity. Alligators are part of our family on this Mother Earth and to protect them is our duty.
