Know More On White AlligatorsDietAlligators eat fishes, birds, turtles, mammals and amphibians. Adult Alligators also eat razorbacks and deer meals and may eat other smaller alligators. They will wait patiently for a prey to come near them and as the opportunity comes they will immediately grab the prey. A raccoon is sufficient for them to remain without food for one week. Alligators BreedingAlligators mating season begin in the month of April. In this month you may hear them touching, rubbing, blowing bubbles and making loud noises to attract their mates. They will involve themselves in mating activity in open waters. One Alligator will mate with ten or more females and will protect their breeding area from other male intruders. Their courtship will continue for six to eight weeks. An alligator is sexually matured when its length reaches six feet or more.After mating, female enters into the thick part of the marsh where she will build nests from muddy vegetation that measure 1 m high and 2 m wide. In this nest she will lay 20 to 60 white color hard-shelled eggs. Their incubation period lasts for nine months. After that hatchlings will make a grunting sound to stimulate their mother to open them out. Mother chews the eggs to bring out 23 cm long young American Alligators. These young Alligators will then escape into their water world. Hatchlings will form groups called "pods" which gives them security.. Their mother will protect them for few years. During first six years of their lives both males and females will grow 30 centimeters long each year. After that the growth of females is slow but male Alligators continue to grow at the same rate for many years. American Alligators life span is for 50 to 60 years. Are American Alligators different from American Crocodiles?Alligators and crocodiles look similar to each other but they have certain physical differences. Alligators have broad heads and blunter snouts whereas Crocodiles have narrow head and long snout. Fourth tooth of the Alligators lower jaw fits into a pocket of the upper jaw. The same tooth in the Crocodile fits into a groove in the side of the upper jaw making it visible when mouth is closed.Crocodiles are fond in brackish or salt water, while Alligators are found in fresh water. Alligators are less aggressive, whereas Crocodiles can become very aggressive. Crocodile's skin color is lighter when compared with Alligators. Are Humans Threat to American Alligators?The population of American Alligators stated declining due to continuous poaching by hunters for their valuable skin. Even though many were selling alligators as pets the population declined. In 1967 the US Fish and wild Life Service Act listed American Alligators as an endangered species.In order to save these species a Federal law of 1970 was passed prohibiting their interstate Trade. Federal Endangered Species Act of 1973 gave further boost to conservation measures. American Alligators population started increasing from 1974 to 1985. Conservation measuresMany sustainable management programs are being undertaken in Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Texas and South Carolina to protect them for more than a decade. Under this program there are around 150 Farms and ranches all over Florida and Louisiana with a population of around 350,000 American Alligators. Their Captive breeding (farming) produces about 20,000 hatchlings annually. Commercial production of skins is highly regulated with an interlocking system of permits, licenses, periodic stock inventories, ranch inspections, rigorous tagging and export requirements.Hunting is also regulated by allotting a number of tags to each licensed hunter, based on the area and quality of alligator habitat and population. Seventeen percent of the animals commercially ranched are returned back to their natural habitat. Still these measures are not adequate, as Alligator skins form the bulk of muti-million dollar industry in the form of leathers and meats. Many Factories and Farms are slaughter houses. In Florida only tens to thousand of these animals are slaughtered each year. American Alligators maintain ecological balance in Nature and cleans the rivers from pollution. Their own gutter holes stores water and quenches the thirst of number of animals during dry season. Their slaughtering should be stopped and their protection should be given due importance.
