Crocodiles - Do You Know About Them?

Crocodiles are large reptiles that usually live in the tropics. They are directly descended from dinosaurs and are one of the oldest species on the planet. Crocodile facts show that these animals live mainly in Africa, Australia and Asia. In their natural habitat crocodiles can be potentially dangerous to human beings when aggravated. The common Nile crocodile is the one most people envision when they hear the word. Certain types, like the saltwater crocodile are know to venture far out to sea.

Types of Crocodiles

There are many types of crocodiles. The Nile crocodile is one of three found in Africa. They can achieve speeds of up to 70 mph over short distances and will eat human beings if given the chance. Their jaws are studded with 64 to 68 large teeth and they read a length of 16-19 feet.

The American crocodile, sometimes known as the American alligator, is less likely to kill human beings but is still a dangerous wild animal. Unlike other crocodiles they have a more rounded body and tail that gives them a distinctive appearance.

The black caiman is the largest crocodile, reaching as much as 20 feet in length. In addition to their black skin, Caimans have menacing red eyes. They live mainly in the Amazon and eat animals ranging from small rodents up to deer.

Where are Crocodiles Found?

Most species of crocodiles can be found in Africa and in regions of Asia. Parts of Australia are also known for their crocodiles. Some travel a fair distance, as they are good at both running and swimming. They sometimes stray into inhabited areas where they can pose a threat to small animals, children, and adults.

Characteristics of Crocodiles

It is possible to find exact crocodile information at the library or bookstore and online. There is some common information on crocodiles applicable to most varieties. Crocodiles have shortened bodies and tails to enable them to move swiftly in the water or on land. Often they will stare fixedly at one point almost as if they are asleep before rapidly attacking their prey. Essentially they are ambush hunters, waiting patiently and striking fiercely. Crocodiles have powerful jaws outfitted with as many as seventy teeth, which they use to kill small to relatively large prey. For larger kills the crocodile will drag its victim under the surface and drown the animal - or human - before eating it.
