How Chinese Alligator crocodiles Reproduce?

They are gifted with a musk gland under the lower jaw, which produces a scent to attract mate. Male alligators can mate with several females in one mating season whereas Females can mate with only one each season. Females build their nests between July and August. Their nests are made of plants material and are smaller then the nests of American Alligators. They lay about 10-50 eggs. Their incubation period lasts for 70 days.

Females will be born if incubation temperature is below 28°C, while males are born if temperatures are above 33°C. The normal temperature whereby even number of males and females are born is 31°C. The ratio of the sex also depends on how deep, or shallow the egg is buried.

When the actual time arrives for the new comers to make their presence felt in this world, they will make a squeaking sound to alert their mother who will help them to break the shell, to enable these new ones to come out. Once they are out, they will remain under the protective care of their mother, unless they are old enough to take care of themselves.

These hatchlings are only 21 cm long and weigh 30 g. In the first few years of their life, their length will increase at a rapid rate but then gradually will slow down.

Their life span in the wild is for 30-35 years whereas in captivity it is for 70 years.

Why Are Chinese Alligators Extinct?

It had been estimated that the total population of the wild Chinese alligators is less than 1,000 and they have been classified as "Critically endangered" under the World Conservation Union's Red List of Threatened Species. The basic reason behind their destruction is the loss of their habitat due to undue human interference, as most of these Alligators live in the areas, which have been converted for agricultural purposes. When they start digging burrows and killing their ducks and other farm animals, farmers do not hesitate to kill them. These animals are then sold in the market. for medicine and meat.

Now the measures are being undertaken to protect these species from complete elimination. Chinese researchers and Government under the Wildlife Protection Law of P. R. China along with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WSC) started successful captive breeding program, whereby thousands of alligators are showing positive signs of survival. WCS biologists are also working with Chinese wildlife authorities to protect and restore remaining wetlands

Under this scheme more than 574 forest or wildlife natural reserves have been recognized to increase their population. Chinese government also set up Chinese Alligators Breeding Research Center in Xuancheng, Anhui province, in 1979, to boost the schemes for their growth and protection. In April 2003, a trial alligator reintroduction program was also initiated with the release of three animals.

The biggest problem is, when their habitat is already severely depleted there is simply no place where the captive-bred alligators can go. If we are to discuss about Chinese Alligator and population then there are lots of issues in this context. Chinese alligator facts say that if the situation is not controlled then endangered Chinese Alligators will become extinct.
