What do Caimans Pets Preferably Eat?

Caiman pets tend to eat anything that is out in front of them so it is up to the owner of the animal to make sure that the caiman is getting a nourishing and varied diet.

Caiman facts show that these animals eat whole animals in the wild providing them with everything they need. Younger animals will eat rats and mice as well as fish. Ask the breeder or seller of the animal what its previous diets was to make sure that you continue its routine. The animal will need to be fed three to four times a week and will probably require crickets, raw fresh meat and shrimp.

Do Caimans make Good Pets?

Caimans are not pets and do not make good pets. They most certainly must not be kept by beginners and if you have never kept a caiman it is better to consider another type of animal like a harmless gecko. Caimans need a large home. They are costly to keep and need proper care to flourish.

Common Species of Caimans in Pet Stores

The main types of caiman pets or caimans that could be kept as pet include the dwarf caiman, which is popular due to its small size. The African dwarf crocodile is also small but has a very temperamental character making it a difficult animal to keep. The American alligator is sometimes kept as a pet but due to its large size this is not recommended.

How to Transport a Caiman?

The best way to transport your caiman is to get it to enter a secure and comfortable container. Make sure that the animal cannot get hurt in the container and provide it with some food.

Handling the animal causes stress to your caiman, which could result in the caiman refusing to eat. However if you really feel that it is important to handle the creature, start while it's young. You will get bitten, but at least the bites from the juvenile animals are not as painful.

As caimans are threatened by habitat loss all over the world these animals are protected and live in controlled areas where hunting and killing is forbidden. In these areas the animals are left along to breed and to live a free life.

Your caiman crocodile will need regular health checks. Make sure that you check your animal regularly yourself and watch out for any discoloring of the skin, wounds and changes in behavior. Smaller wounds can turn into big problems so always keep your animal comfortable and safe and give it plenty of space to move around. The caiman alligator will thank you for your good care by living a healthy and happy life for you to enjoy.
