Caimans - Can You Have Them for Pets?

The natural habitat of the caiman crocodile is in South America and Central America. These animals are sometimes killed and used for their caiman skin.
Fortunately law now regulates this practice. In the animal trade caiman crocodiles are often presented and sold as cute baby alligators. The caiman alligator is certainly nothing like a baby alligator and can be fiercely dangerous if you treat the animal the wrong way. Caiman are smaller than the average crocodile and they appear to be grinning all the time because their teeth show.

Types of Caimans

There are quite a few different kinds of caiman of which the best-known is the so-called spectacled caiman. A bony ridge situated between the eyes of the animal makes it seem as if the caiman is wearing a pair of spectacles. Other well-known types of caiman include the black caiman, which can grow up to 5 meters in length and is the largest member of the caiman family and the common caiman.

Where are Caimans Found?

Caimans prefer to live in areas with still waters and if the caiman habitat is not offering the right conditions, the caiman will move on to another location or bury itself in mud and wait for the conditions to change. The best-known areas where caimans live are freshwater habitats in South and Central America. According to information on caimans the animal can be found in freshwater habitats in Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, and the United States

Things to Consider Before Buying an Enclosure for Caimans

It is possible to buy ready built tanks but most often people build their own enclosure for their pet caiman ensuring that the animal has enough space. The materials that are most often used are fiberglass and wood and the exact size depends on the size of the animal. Ideally an enclosure should have sliding doors to be able to let the animal go outside easily and the enclosure should be positioned near another enclosed outdoor space where the animal is allowed to spend time. Other things to think of before you buy or build a cayman enclosure are:
Heating
When you are building your enclosure you must make sure that there are heating elements such as heated pipes running through the indoor and outdoor areas. The animals are used to heat and you need to make sure that the animal can withdraw and be warm when it wants to be. Install a water heater outside the enclosure so that warm water can run through the heating pipes within the enclosure.
Decorations
Keep decorations such as plants to a minimum. The animal can easily hurt itself by knocking over any decorations so make sure that any type of decoration is securely fastened. Find out what the natural habitat of your caiman is like and try to provide some sand and pebbles to make it feel comfortable. Make sure that the enclosure is large enough to provide an area of cover for the animal.
Water Filtration
As cleaning the water in the enclosure can be a difficult and unsettling task to perform, it is best to install a water filter system so that you don't have to disturb the animal unnecessarily. Most people use a filter/pump 300 watt system that can be purchased from any good aquatic garden store.
