It can be difficult to tell the difference between alligator and crocodile breeds if you don't know how to recognize the characteristics of these animals.To compare the alligator and crocodile you have to be aware of the often small difference between the two species. Alligators and crocodiles often look very much alike.

Do Crocodiles and Alligators have similar Characteristics?

Most of the alligator and crocodile similarities are easy to identify.

Both crocodiles and alligators have long and powerful bodies. Certain types of crocodiles can grow up to 7 meters long and in some cases males can weigh as much as 1500 kilos. These creatures are the most powerful amphibians on the planet.

Alligators and crocodiles have thick and scaly hides. The hides of crocodiles (especially of the saltwater crocodile) are used to make shoes, handbags and other leather goods.

The way these two types of animals move and hide and even catch their prey may look similar to someone who has no experience with the living and eating habits of both crocodiles and alligators.

The Similar Eating Habits of Alligators and Crocodiles

It is nearly impossible to see the difference between alligators and crocodiles if you look at their eating habits. The main similarities that help to compare alligator and crocodiles are:

Both species consume small animals like reptiles and small types of fish. These animals are usually caught when the crocodiles or alligators are swimming.

Both animals may attack bigger birds, pigs and wild boar if they can get close to them. The crocodile or alligator will patiently wait in hiding for its victim. When an animal gets close enough, the crocodile will jump forward and clench its prey between its teeth.

Are Alligators docile when compared to Crocodiles?

In general alligators are perceived as being more docile when compared to crocodiles. There are always exceptions to this rule however and alligators can lash out to people when cornered or if the animal feels threatened in any way. The best advice you can follow is to leave these animals alone. Do not aggravate them and only observe them from a distance in the company of a qualified guide.
